Food is the basic material in our daily life. Food consumption often occupies a great proportion of daily expenses. Therefore, saving money and food consumtpion have a significant correlation.

The following are some tips for saving money on food consumption:
1.      Plan your meals in advance and try not to go to the grocery store without a shopping list. Get started by making a chart with four columns at the top for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. Then list out along the side of the chart the number of days you want to plan. This shopping list can help avoid impulse purchases or costly mistakes like falling for the displays at the end of the aisles.

2.      Buy vegetables, fruits and meats in-season when they are cheapest and most nutritious and preserve them yourself. Many holistic health experts think it is not only less expensive but better for your health to eat in harmony with both the environment and climate.

3.      If you have the storage space, stock up on sale goods for non perishable purchases on items you normally buy. Having the food on hand is a great convenience and a great way to save money on food.

4.      Buy generic or store brands when possible. Most are identical to those national brands and saving can be up to 40%.

5.      At the grocery store, stick to the outside aisles and avoid the center aisles and the deli area. The most expensive highly-processed low-nutrition foods are in the deli or in the centre of the store.

6.      Keeping a small notebook of prices for produce you regularly buy so you will know when you see a sale whether or not the price is really a good deal.

7.      A garden is a super way to save money on food. Plant your own garden or raise a couple of animals. The rewards are great and most people find working in the garden to be a good way to relieve stress. Even if you are living in an apartment ten stories off the ground, you can grow a tomato or pepper in a container.

8.      Watch grocery store advertisements for sales so that you can stock up on items you know you will use. You can sometimes save money by buying more of something.

9.      Use coupons. People who invest time in saving and organizing coupons often save a lot of money. You should be aware of how much time you take to store, sort and decide which coupons to use.

10. Use up leftovers to make soup. Make soup broth from leftover meat, bones and vegetables scraps. Freeze any excess.

11. Instead of ready-made desserts, make your own cookies, cakes.

12. Make your own lunch, and take it with you to work instead of eating out.

As a Japanese proverb says: “Getting money is like digging with a needle; spending it is like water soaking into sand.” Therefore, please follow the above tips, you can save your money on food consumption.
